5 Tracks You Need This Week

Blood Orange – Jewelry

* NEW MUSIC ALERT * The one and only Dev Hynes has been hinting on his instagram  for quite a while of an imminent new album, and now finally it’s here! In a press release Hynes outlined : “My newest album is an exploration into my own and many types of black depression, an honest look at the corners of black existence, and the ongoing anxieties of queer/people of colour.  A reach back into childhood and modern traumas, and the things we do to get through it all.  The underlying thread through each piece on the album is the idea of HOPE, and the lights we can try to turn on within ourselves with a hopefully positive outcome of helping others out of their darkness”. Definitely worth a listen.

Nikes – Frank Ocean

On Ocean’s 2nd Anniversary of Blond it seems only fitting that he is featured in the Top 5.  The Guardian stated the album was ‘A cultural artefact that deserves to be studied’, they’re not wrong.

Rocket Man – Young Thug

The ‘unlikely cover of the week’ award goes to Young Thug with his cover of Elton John’s Rocket man. It’s been reported they’ve been long term friends, but I don’t think anyone expected this dreamy ‘glam trap’ cover of a classic on.

Nicki Minaj – Majesty

The VMAs. Once the event scribbled into school journals as a ‘must watch’, nowadays it’s a lot less controversy (read : Kanye stealing trophies), and instead it’s waiting for the iconic Cardi B or Nicki Minaj to perform. Minaj didn’t disappoint, she performed 3 tracks off her long awaited album QUEEN.

I Might Need Security – Chance The Rapper

A sample from Jamie Foxx 2002 ‘I Might Need Security’ gig, The tumbling ‘fuck you‘s will be a forever mood. With the abstract album artwork referencing the Arthur fist meme,  Chance delves into more of a political stance. He released this along with 3 other tracks.
